Pocahontas Indian Mound |
|
|
| This rectangular platform mound, 175 feet across at the base and about 22 feet high, was built and used during the Mississippian period, between A.D. 1,000 and 1,300. Remains of a mud-plastered log-post building have been found atop the mound. This structure was used as a ceremonial temple or as the residence of a chief. An extensive former village area surrounds the mound. The site has been incorporated in to a road side park and is open to the public free of charge. It is located on U.S. Highway 49 at the town of Pocahontas, about 9 miles north of the Jackson, Mississippi, interchange of U.S. 49 and I-220. |
